Jesus of Nazareth, what have we to do with you?
Jesus of Nazareth, what have we to do with you?
Mark 1:23-27『And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; What have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.』
And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the Sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
Jews did not gather publicly and perform religious ceremonies on the Sabbath. This day was a day of rest and not a day for performing any religious duties. Of course, there were rituals observed privately in Jewish families, but there were no separate rituals held publicly. Jews visited the Temple in Jerusalem three times a year. During the Jewish holidays of Tabernacles, Weeks, and Passover, all Jewish men had to come to the temple.
However, temple-centered religion ends with the destruction of Judah. In 587 B.C., Judah was occupied by Babylon, and Jerusalem was destroyed. The temple was destroyed, and its objects were moved to Babylon. Until now, the temple was the center of Israel's faith, a symbol and focal point of Israel. But all those religious symbols disappeared. So what they found was the Word. During the captivity, they were rather obsessed with the Word. The sacred documents were organized and compiled into books. This was something that was neglected in the temple tradition where ancestral rites were the center. And instead of a temple, they created an institution called a synagogue.
When more than 10 Jewish men gathered together, they were required to build a synagogue. The important thing is that the synagogue was not a building, but people, that is, a community, were its constituent elements. Also, it was possible to build a synagogue by gathering just 10 Jewish men. Only 10 people were needed, no larger building was needed, and no priests or Levites were needed. That is why synagogues could be built everywhere. There, the Jews began to have liturgies centered on the Word rather than sacrifices.
Any adult male could take a Bible scroll and read and interpret it in front of the congregation. There were no complicated restrictions. The best use of that system was the ministry of Jesus and the Apostle Paul. Wherever they went, they found a synagogue, took out the Word, read it, and interpreted it according to the new gospel. Such a synagogue tradition had already been passed down for hundreds of years since the time of exile.
The most important significance of the synagogue was that it created the religious rituals they would perform on the Sabbath. Based on a community of 10 or more adult men near people, a ritual centered on words rather than ancestral rites arose. Thanks to their accessibility, people can visit the synagogue, a religious institution, every Sabbath. As the ancestral rites disappeared, the privileged classes such as priests and royal family could not rule. In their stead, anyone could become the center of the liturgy. With this, the Sabbath became not just a day of rest, but a day of worship to God. The Sabbath became a day to read, interpret, and engrave the meaning of the Word.
In the synagogue demon-possessed (Tophneuma to akasarton), Tophneuma (τὸ πνεῦμα) is the spirit (Holy Spirit). Spirit means angel. To Akasarton (τὸ ἀκάθαρτον) means impure, meaning a sinner. In other words, ghosts are angels who manage sinners. This sinner has nothing to do with Jesus. They mean those who have nothing to do with the kingdom of God. “What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth?”
The meaning of a person possessed by a demon refers to a demon (angel) and a sinner managed by a demon. Ghosts are also angels. Ghosts are just angels who take on the role of villains who manage sinners. What the angel is saying is, “Jesus, this person is a sinner under my control, but it has nothing to do with you, does it?” Every human being has an angel like this. He confines sinners in the dirt and does not allow them to come out. However, when a sinner becomes a free person, the angel becomes an angel preaching the gospel to him.
This is what the demon says to Jesus: 『 art thou come to destroy (Aporesai) us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.』Apo means to separate from ~. Resai comes from the word "olethros" and means to be destroyed. So, in Aporesai, the ghost asks, “Will this sinner be separated from us and our management will end?” And the ghost clearly knows who Jesus is. He knows that the Holy One of God has the power to forgive sins.
『And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.』 This is the moment when a sinner becomes a free person because the demon comes out of that person. Even if the ghost goes out and you become a free person, you can return to being a sinner again. Because if you are not reborn through water and the Holy Spirit, demons can enter again.
『what new(Kaineκαινῆ) doctrine(Didache διδαχὴ) is this? for with authority(Exousian) commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.』Didache is a legal term, meaning judicial authority. Caine Didache, a new teaching, is used in 2 Corinthians 3:6. 『Who also hath made us able ministers of the new (Caine) testament (Didache); not of the letter, but of the spirit(pneuma): for the letter killeth, but the spirit gives life.』
Here, Didache is translated as covenant, and it is said that the new covenant is made of spirit (pneuma), and the spirit is what gives life. In other words, the imprisoned sinner was released due to the special pardon power of the Son of God. In Luke 22:19-20, “And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.” Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.” So the new teaching is the new covenant, which means “drinking the blood of Jesus (dying with him on the cross), It means that “one who eats flesh (is resurrected with Christ) is free from sin.”
『for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits (to pneuma to akasarton), and they do obey him.』 Jesus commands the angel (topneuma) who supervises sinners, and the angel (demonic) obeys the Son of God. The reason why the angel obeys Jesus is after Satan (the devil) tested Jesus and clearly confirmed that he was the Son of God, the angel who manages sin obeyed Jesus.
Therefore, all angels (ghosts) who play the villain must obey the Son of God. In Mark 1:13, “And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and he was with the wild beasts (Derion); and the angels ministered unto him.』Derion is a beast, meaning a sinner in the form of a beast wearing a human mask. Jesus (the lawyer) argues with Satan (the prosecutor) to free the criminal. As a result, the sinner is released thanks to the victory of Jesus (the lawyer).
